Accused In Jonathan Zak Murder Back In Court

One of the two men charged in the 2012 death of Jonathan Zak was back in London court Tuesday.

William McDonald appeared via video link from the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre.  A representative for his defence lawyer requested the case be put over as they are awaiting more disclosure from the Crown.

The 26-year-old was charged in May with second degree murder in Zak’s death.  Thomas Lako, 25, was charged a few weeks later with manslaughter in connection to the case.

Zak was shot dead as he walked on a footpath near Boullee St. and Victoria St. in the early morning hours of May 31, 2012.  Police believe the 29-year-old, who was coming home after an evening spent with friends, was the intended target of a robbery and did not know his killers.

During Tuesday's proceedings, McDonald asked the Justice of the Peace to adjourn the matter for three weeks instead of just one as he doesn't like coming back "week after week."  Despite that request, the case was put over to next Wednesday.

McDonald has been in custody since February when he was charged with second degree murder in the shooting death of Emmanuel Awai, 26, who was found dead in an apartment at 135 Connaught Ave. last December.  He is also charged in a parking lot shooting in the area of John St. and Richmond St. in April 2016.  A man was critically injured in that incident but survived.

Evidence uncovered during the Awai murder investigation led police to a break in the Zak cold case.
