Aylmer teen charged in taxi theft that led OPP officer to fire gun

Charges have been laid against an 18-year-old a week after an OPP officer ended up firing her gun at a taxi carjacking suspect.

OPP were notified about a yellow cab that had been forcefully stolen from a driver in London around 3 a.m. last Wednesday. Roughly an hour later, an officer in Elgin County spotted the stolen vehicle heading east on Talbot Line.

After initially attempting to evade police, the vehicle was stopped with the help of Aylmer police just east of Rogers Road.

The driver got out of the taxi and started running. During an "interaction" between the man and police, one officer deployed a taser, and another officer discharged her firearm. The man was not hit, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said in a statement after invoking its mandate.

The man was arrested and taken to hospital for medical assessment unrelated to the interaction before being transferred into the custody of London police.

Luis Sanchez, 18, of Aylmer has since been charged with flight from police and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

The SIU investigation into the incident is ongoing. Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case, the SIU said.
