Southwestern Ontario's largest school board is receiving funding to build two new public elementary schools in London.
The Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB) announced on Monday that the Ontario Ministry of Education will provide a total of $55.3-million to build the pair of schools.
One of them will be in the west end, with the Ministry awarding $27.1 million. It will accommodate 525 students and also include a five-room child care centre.
The other will be in southeast London. The $28.2 million school will house 655 students, plus a five-room child care centre.
Education Minister Stephen Lecce was in London Monday for the announcement.
"Our government is more than doubling the funding to build new schools, which represents the single largest investment in school building in Ontario history," said Lecce. "We are stepping up with a massive investment to build the homes, schools, and communities our province needs, and to ensure children have access to state-of-the-art schools close to home that give them real life and job skills to succeed in the future. I want to reiterate my thanks to MPP Rob Flack for his relentless advocacy for local families."
Shirley Glover, Director of Child Care and Early Years for the City of London, said the new schools will bring 176 new childcare spaces.
"We commend the Thames Valley District School Board, the Ministry of Education, and all project partners for a collaborative effort in bringing these important projects to life," said Glover. "These projects reflect the City’s commitment to growing the number of licensed childcare spaces to support families. As these projects take shape, we look forward to the positive impact they will have on increasing access to licensed child care and the benefits this care will provide to future generations."
Both projects are in the land acquisition stage, with public information sessions still to come. The schools are expected to be open for the 2026-2027 school year.
