Protesters set up camp at Western

Western University is now among university campuses that have seen protesters set up encampments on their property.

On Wednesday, Western University announced that a group of protesters began setting up tents outside the university's community centre.

John Doerkson, Western's Vice-Provost of Students, confirmed that the group was behaving peacefully although they broke campus rules by erecting the tents.

"We have begun a dialogue with organizers. We have affirmed their right to protest and indicated that we are here to work with them to ensure their activity remains peaceful and lawful," Doerkson said in a statement released Wednesday afternoon.

He also warned that "Western will not tolerate hate speech."

According to the statement, campus special constables are closely monitoring the situation and university officials are also consulting with London police.

The tents were taken down by the demonstrators before the end of the night.

Similar protests linked to the Israel-Hamas war have occurred at university campuses across Canada and the United States.

There have been reports of violence at protest camps on university grounds in New York and California.
