Western's Vanier Cup dreams dashed in Montreal

The top-ranked university football team in the country saw their Vanier Cup dreams go up in smoke at the hands of a Quebec powerhouse.

The Western Mustangs' 10-game unbeaten streak ended Saturday, with a 29-3 loss to the Montreal Carabins.

The Uteck Bowl was held at the CEPSUM Stadium in Montreal.

The Carabins controlled the game from the start, scoring two touchdowns and three field goals by halftime. The Mustangs didn't help themselves out much, turning the ball over six times in the first half.

Western quarterback Evan Hillock was sacked five times during the game. He went 15-for-29 for 212 yards with three interceptions.

Kicker Brian Garrity scored Western's only points of the day, with a 21-yard field goal in the third quarter.

Despite not making it all the way, the Mustangs had a successful season. The team finished with a 10-1 record and won the Yates Cup for the 35th time in team history.

The Montreal Carabins will take on the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday, November 25, in Kingston for the Vanier Cup.
