Fanshawe College investigates threats of sexual violence

Officials with Fanshawe College say they have reached out to London police regarding alleged threats of sexual violence made on a social media app.

According to the college, the sexually violent, threatening posts were reportedly made on Discord, an instant messaging app with servers, or rooms, that allow users to communicate over voice, video, and text. College officials have not specified what the posts said exactly or when they were made.

As a result, Fanshawe said it will have extra security at the Outback Shack student bar and restaurant and Oasis dining area located on campus.

"The college will not tolerate gender-based and sexual violence. We support those who experience gender-based or sexual violence, and we work diligently in all Fanshawe environments and with community partners on programs, policies and resources to reduce the experience of gender-based and sexual violence at Fanshawe," read a statement from the college.

Fanshawe said its Campus Security Services is working with members of the London Police Service to identify the individuals accused of making the threatening posts. London police have yet to make any official statement about the incident.

Fanshawe's Sexual Violence Prevention Advisor will hold a drop-in support session Thursday afternoon, private sessions are also being made available for students.

The allegations come just days after Western University made national headlines regarding a series of alleged sexual assaults that are said to have taken place at an on-campus residence.
