Fanshawe College has been selected as part of the new Schulich Builders program, which offers substantial financial awards for students in skilled trades programs.
The Schulich Foundation announced the new builders program on February 9. It will distribute 100 scholarships to Ontario's "most promising" trade students each year.
"We are proud to promote the skilled trades and support students pursuing this rewarding career path," said Judy Schulich, executive vice-president of The Schulich Foundation. "Canadians rely heavily on the trades to build and maintain infrastructure critical for prosperous communities. Our challenge today is not having enough of these talented people to meet the demand.”
Fanshawe was one of 10 institutions in the province selected for Schulich Builders. As a result, the college received a $325,000 donation from Schulich Foundation, which will fund the 10 scholarships being awarded to Fanshawe students in fall 2023.
"As one of the largest training facilities for skilled trades in the province, we are committed to growing capacity in the skilled trades sector. This gift from the Schulich Foundation will make a significant difference to students at Fanshawe, and we are so grateful for their generosity," said Fanshawe College President Peter Devlin.
The scholarships range from $20,000 - $40,000 depending on the type of program a recipient is enrolled in. Those pursuing a one-year certificate are eligible for one of five $20K scholarships, while those in two-year diploma programs can get one of five awards worth $40K.
Fanshawe College says these scholarships will cover tuition, tools, and living expenses. Besides financial support, the builders program will also provide leadership training and mentorship opportunities for those involved.
