Recoveries outpace new COVID-19 cases in London-area

Three new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the London region.

Officials with the Middlesex London Health Unit reported the trio of new cases on Tuesday. There has now been a total of 610 COVID-19 cases in the city and county since January.

The number of new cases reported daily has remained relatively low for the past couple of weeks. Most recently there were zero cases reported on Saturday, three on Sunday, and one on Monday. In addition to the low case count, there is another positive sign the area is heading in the right direction when it comes to flattening the curve. The number of people who have recovered from the virus was higher than the number of new cases confirmed over the last 24 hours.

Public health officials said the number of resolved cases went up by four, to 483 on Tuesday.

The total number of COVID-19 related deaths in London has remained at 57 since June 12.

Two outbreaks of the virus continue at local long-term care/retirement homes – Westmount Gardens and Peoplecare Oak Crossing.

It has been one week since Southwestern Public health, which represents Elgin and Oxford counties, has reported any new lab-confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus. That area's total number of cases stands at 82, with four deaths related to the virus. The number of people to recover from COVID-19 in the region has increased by three over the past 24 hours and now stands at 74.

Provincially, there was a slight jump in the number of daily confirmed cases.

Public health officials said there were 216 new cases of the virus confirmed across the province on Tuesday. The bulk of the cases (168) were in the Windsor, Toronto, Peel, and York regions. Twenty-seven of the province's 34 health units recorded five or fewer new cases.

It is the second time in the last ten days the number of new cases climbed above 200 in a single day.

"While it’s too early to draw conclusions from a single day of data, we’re watching closely for shifts in #COVID19 trends as we gradually reopen the province’s economy and as local public health officials work quickly to contain any spread," Health Minister Christine Elliott tweeted.

With the exception of Toronto, Peel, and Windsor-Essex, all of the provinces entered Stage 2 of Ontario's reopening plan over the past two weeks. Stage 2 allows for the opening of hair salons, restaurant patios, malls and splash pads.

Toronto and Peel Region will join Stage 2 as of Wednesday, while Windsor-Essex will remain in Stage 1 until further notice.

Since the start of the outbreak, there have been 33,853 cases reported in Ontario. Of those, 29,107 have been resolved. There were ten additional deaths since Monday, bringing the province's death toll to 2,619.

The number of people in hospital with the virus has risen slightly, up to 288. Seventy-five of those patients are listed in intensive care, with 54 on a ventilator.
