Public board reports first case of COVID-19

COVID-19 has reached the Greater Essex County District School Board.

According to a letter posted Sunday on the board's official website, a member of the Kingsville District High School community tested positive for the virus.

Bill Toews, the school's principal, said the school and the board immediately followed the proper protocol.

"We have been working with the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit by providing lists of students and staff who may have been in contact with the individual," wrote Toews. "Both the vice principal and I personally contacted any individuals who have an identified high-risk exposure with the confirmed case. If you have not been contacted, you or your child have not been identified as close contacts."

This is the third positive case reported by a school in Windsor-Essex. Last week, the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board identified a patient from Stella Maris Elementary School in Amherstburg. Conseil Scolaire Catholique Providence, the French-language Catholic board, reported a case Friday at L'Essor Secondary School in Tecumseh.

The school remains open for classes as usual Monday. Toews reminded parents to keep students home if they show any symptoms.

"Please continue to monitor yourself and child for symptoms of COVID-19 each morning. If you and/or your child are ill, please remain at home and call your health care provider for further direction," wrote Toews. "People with COVID-19 may have little to no symptoms; some symptoms are similar to the common cold or flu."

As is with the previous two cases, it was not disclosed if the patient at Kingsville District High School was a student or staff member.
