New construction spots to slow downtown traffic

Work to replace aging sewers and the removal of a construction crane are expected to cause new traffic slow-downs in two separate spots in downtown London.

Starting Monday, crews will begin prepping York Street between Clarence and Wellington streets for a large-scale sewer replacement project. For the next couple of weeks, work to install temporary signals and lighting will be underway. There will be lane restrictions along the one block stretch and there will be no access to or from Clarence at York.

The lane restrictions will remain in place until July, when York from Clarence to Wellington will be closed entirely until December.

"The anticipated timing of traffic impacts may shift as the project progresses," the city said in a statement. "A public service announcement will be issued prior to each stage of construction to share information about associated traffic impacts."

Drivers and cyclists are being told to expect delays in the area and to use alternate routes where possible. For pedestrians, the sidewalk on the south side of York will stay open during construction and signage will be erected to help guide people through the area.

London Transit is not expected to be affected by the first phase of the work. Access to businesses and residences in the area will be maintained, the city said.

The second phase of the sewer replacement project will come next year with staged road closures on Wellington from King to Horton streets and on York between Wellington to Colborne streets. The work will increase sewer capacity for new development and separate combined storm and sanitary sewers to help improve the health of the Thames River, the city said.

The other new construction spot that will cause traffic headaches for drivers is on Talbot Street.

Talbot from John to Mill streets will be closed for one week as of Monday. That is to allow for the removal of a tower crane from the area.

"During this time, a signed detour will be in place for motorists using Central Avenue, Richmond Street and Oxford Street," the city said. "People driving through the area are advised to follow detour signs to reach their destination and use alternative routes, if possible."

Removal of the crane will also require temporary sidewalk closures throughout the week. As such, pedestrians are encouraged to use nearby streets.
