Oktoberfest Kicks Off

Londoners are about to get a big taste of German culture, as the first annual Oktoberfest at the Western Fair District begins.

The festival will run for a total of five nights at the Metroland Media Agriplex. The highlight will be next Thursday's Rock the Festhalle concert featuring Kim Mitchell and Colin James, presented by Free 98-1. There will also be polka bands, the Saxonia Hall Dancers, and a Bavarian carnival.

When Western Fair officials announced in July that London would host an Oktoberfest, it was suggested that it would grow in the future.

“Who knows where it might lead, and if it takes on another dimension in other parts of the city…that’s great too,” CEO of the Western Fair District Hugh Mitchell said at the time. “It’s customs, culture around German music and attire that follows with that culture. So, there’s an educational component as well as an entertainment component.”

It's expected up to 10,000 people will take in the festival.
