Five People And Dog Struck By Lightning

Three adults and two children had to be taken to hospital after being struck by lightning in Norfolk County.

The Ontario Provincial Police said on Monday around 3:47pm, the five people and a dog were standing under two large maple trees when they were struck by lightning at a Main St. address in Courtland.

The five people all suffered minor injuries and were treated in hospital. The dog's injuries were also minor.

It is unknown what the five people were doing at the time of the lightning strike, but police said there is no safe place to be outside during a storm.

"If you can hear thunder, it is your warning that you are within striking distance of lightning," police said.

Every year six to ten people are struck and killed by lightning in Canada, while another 150-160 people are injured, according to Environment Canada.
